True and/or FAlse

January 10th, 2009

Fall Out BoyFall Out Boy are the cover kids on the February edition of Blender magazine.  Normally, this would be a good thing, but the band has spoken out against the content of the article accompanying the photo, which reportedly paints bassist Pete Wentz as a “paranoid, pill-popping narcissist” and recounts a story that has drummer Andy Hurley becoming “suicidal” and punching metal doors after witnessing a Green Bay Packers loss.  Hurley has said the article is “sensationalist…made up to sell a story. It’s [full of] out-of-context quotes” while vocalist Patrick Stump muses, “…I found it an objectively well-written (if plotless) thing … It’s an entertaining article that manages to take its hero from the heights of superstardom to the depths of narcissism,” he wrote. “But it never redeems him and it does so at the cost of fact. [Plus], at the end of both my and [guitarist] Joe [Trohman]’s quotes you can almost hear the context fading in the distance … If only we had had that media training! We would know how better to fabricate pull quotes!”

Blender has issued a statement saying, “”We stand by our reporting. Anyone who reads the entire article will see that it is not only fair but essentially positive.”

No matter who you believe or what the truth actually is, this fall out serves as a reminder not to take everything you read at face value and to understand that there is more than one side to every story.
