At some point in our lives, we’ve all wondered what it’s like to be a celebrity. But with all the celebrity baby news, have you ever wondered what it’s like to be the child of celebrities?
Wonder no more. Well, at least not about what life was like for Carrie Fisher. She gives all the answers in her autobiography, which will be released December 1. The actress, who is best known for her role as Princess Leia in the original Star Wars Trilogy, is the daughter of Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds, who were A-List celebrities in their day.
The UK’s Daily Mail gave a sneak peek into the book yesterday. While Carrie’s life has been somewhat tragic - she was introduced to drugs at a young age, diagnosed with bipolar disorder, the list goes on… - her reflections on it all are upbeat and humorous.
Recounting her struggle with mental illness, she says,
“A consequence of being the child of celebrities is that ‘real life’ is this other thing - we were always trying to determine what was going on in this distant, incomprehensible place. ‘Surreal life’ would have been a more appropriate description…
When I spoke about my mental illness publicly, I won great acclaim. I waited my entire life to get an award for something, anything (OK, fine, not acting, but what about a tiny little award for writing? Nope), I now get awards for being mentally ill.
I’m actually in the Abnormal Psychology textbook. My family is so proud. When I heard I was in it, I was told it was with a photo. But it’s not like anyone called me and said: ‘Have you got a snapshot of yourself looking depressed or manic?’ so for years I wondered, what picture?
Recently I found it. Anyone who’d wear a hairstyle like that has to be nuts! Right?”
An interesting take from somebody who’s lead a very interesting life. We might just have to pick up a copy.
