Scott CARES, do YOu care?

November 16th, 2008

Cancer is a condition that will unfortunately touch the lives of nearly every American. While researchers are learning more about the disease each day, funding these programs requires help from those who truly care. Scott Hamilton is an Olympic Champion and the super-excited announcer on NBC’s Olympic broadcasts. He is also a cancer survivor.

After his treatment at the Cleveland Clinic Taussig Cancer Institute, Scott developed a foundation at the hospital to promote cancer awareness and raise funds for cancer research. The Scott CARES initiative is a Cancer Alliance for Research Education and Suvivorship. For the past 9 years, the ice show and gala has raised over $10 million dollars for the CARES Initiative.

At this year’s “An Evening with Scott Hamilton and Friends,” stars of the skating world gave one evening out of a busy winter schedule to show just how much they CARE. Hosted by Scott and fellow Olympic Champ Kristi Yamaguchi on November 8, the crowd of 7,200 enjoyed the off ice sounds of musical guests Kenny Loggins and the Cleveland Pops Orchestra. Performers on the ice included World Champions Todd Eldridge, Jeffrey Buttle, and Yuka Sato, World Silver medalists Marie-France Dubreuil and Patrice Lauzon and reigning US Champions Evan Lysacek, Mirai Nagasu, Keauna McLaughlin and Rockne Brubaker. Following the show, 700 guests enjoyed a night of dining and dancing at the black tie gala.

This year’s gala raised nearly $1 million and over the past nine years $2 million has been awarded for new research. This year $400,000 in grants funded further cancer research through the initiative’s grant program.

That’s quality news. I’m no figure skating fan, but for that cause, I stand and applaud. On a sidenote…

I know “CARES” is an acronym for Cancer Alliance for Research Education and Suvivorship, but it does end the streak of consecutive article titles with the NOssip trademark: two caps…

Maverick, please excuse our oversight. Does the amended title fit our prior posting standards?

Thanks for applauding, you don’t have to be a figure skater to CARE!

[...] 10. Scott CAres…Do You Care?: I enjoyed writing this post so much.  Scott’s charitable contributions are only matched with his huge personality.  His work in one night is just amazing and I cannot wait to hear the breakthroughs the research team at the Cleveland Clinic can reach due to his grants. yahooBuzzArticleHeadline = “The Procrastinator’s Top TEn NOssips ‘08″; http://www.thenossip.com/2008/12/31/top-ten-nossips-08/ [...]
