What do you know about malaria? We in the United States probably don’t know a lot because the disease isn’t a problem here. So here’s an FYI:
Fact: Malaria is transmitted via mosquito bites
Fact: Malaria kills approximately 1 million people worldwide every year.
Fact: One person dies of malaria every 30 seconds in Africa.
Fact: American Idol Champion and “No Air” singer Jordin Sparks is doing something to help. (And has been since as early as February this year. But have you heard about it in the entertainment news? Me either.)
Sparks is doing that through her partnership with Malaria No More, a charity which distributes mosquito nets to people in Africa who need them to be protected from the insects that carry the disease. Jordin recently visited Ghana to help with the campaign there, and is encouraging people here to get involved by donating funds to the charity, which will go toward mosquito nets for children in Africa. Sparks and Malaria No More will contribute one mosquito net for every one donated.
In a video created to spread the word about the Malaria No More foundation, Sparks says, “You don’t have to be a professional singer to be a star. Protecting kids from disease makes you one.”
If you’d like to be a star, visit the Malaria No More website to find out more about the disease and how you can help.
